New version of MMI/Nav system: any way to upgrade?
I know the answer is 'no', but thought I'd ask anyway.
When the talked-about new version of the MMI/Nav system comes out (haven't heard when), will there be any way (cost-issues aside) to upgrade existing 2009 A4s? Seems like it would largely be a software thing, unless they are messing with the whole dashboard and MMI controller.
Pisses me off that they would release "all-new" A4 while planning to upgrade the MMI thing later.
I know it's stupid, but I'd pay $5000 or something for the upgrade (cuz I'm that sort of gadget nut). Although, I haven't really heard what's going to be improved about it, so maybe I should hold off a bit....

Doubt it's possible - new 3G MMI has higher rez screen (800 x 500) and Nvidia GPU for 3D...
...unless they replaced the MMI hardware, screen and all the wiring. I'd guess that'd be way more than $5000 if you include the labor.

This has been discussed several times. It will require completely different hardware...
including a new MMI controller, modules, screen and what have you. Your $5K estimate may be too low (if it's even possible).
My ersatz solution? I use a high end Garmin along with the Audi Nav. This way I have the best of both worlds - I can use two different zoom levels at the same time though mostly I use the MMI screen for music info while using the Garmin for directions. Mix and Match. Though I agree it would have been much nicer to have the 3G Nav. I could have waited until the 2010 model but there's always something better down the road. If I had waited for the technology to get better, I would never get a new car.

Sure, but if you think $5,000 will do it, then the answer is "no."
If you really were willing to dump $5K into your 09 for this upgrade, why not just trade the thing in on a new one. If your A4 depreciated, hmm, $8K (maybe less, maybe more) why not just pay the piper and get the 2010 with the newest toys?
Me? Well, here's my plan: I'm going to buy a Jeep SRT8, take the engine out of it and put THAT into my 09 A4, also buy all the parts for the DSG trans, then custom order up rated internals to handle the extra power of the Hemi.
Then, I'm going to have a coachworks company turn the sedan into a drop top (metal, not cloth) and while I'm at it build a flexible partition and more custom body work to be able, at the touch of a button, to have my A4 able to be EITHER a drop top OR an Avant.
Finally, because it is so cool, I will buy an Infiniti EX with the all around monitor, carefully extract that feature and have it fitted to the A4.
Question: Possible?
Answer: Yes, and how high is the stack of $100, check that, $1,000 bills that I'm willing (or able to spend?)
Signed: It's only money.

If it can be fitted at the factory then it'll be able to upgrade....if you've $$$$ to burn
This has been discussed in the UK and in addition to all the modules etc you'll also need a need a new dash!

It's much more extensive than just s/w.
H/W wise you'll need:
- new main unit
- new graphics GPU
- new higher resolution screen
- new controller ****
STFA for more. This idea has been asked & shot down a gazillion times. To upgrade you'll basically need to rip the entire existing system out and replace it with the new system. Even so I'm not sure if the new MMI communicates with the rest of the car using the same protocols as the current one.
