Replacement Key Cost

My girlfriend dropped the audi key into a very hard to reach place. I have no idea how she managed it, you'd have to try and throw that key into that crack, but she did and now it is 6ft under a concrete encased staircase with only a little crack to work through. We've been fishing for it with magnets and such with limited success. Getting this resolved might be a plus for our relationship!
The key is not magnetic but a little keyholder ring that it is attached to hopefully is. We'll see, I'm not too comfortable having just one key (not counting the emergency thingie).

I'm not 100% sure on Audis but for similar VWs there's an RFID chip inside the key which can only be programmed once. A VCDS (vag com) can't do it unless you have the key code, and since Audi and VW share many systems, I doubt the dealer even sees the key code for security reasons. You can retrieve it using an aftermarket tool though and then use VCDS. Read my notes on VW keys and the immobilizer system for more details and pics: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q_h.../mk5keyFAQ.htm and http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q_h...mmobilizer.htm I don't see why you can't buy a new cut key from an online parts dealer for cheaper and have your local dealer do the immobilizer programming.
PS, $255 is actually a good price at the dealer. The average key at the dealer after programming is about $350. Some types of keys go for $450.
