This seems unusual. Most aftermarket installations would require splicing into the wires to attach the connector harness. This is usually routine and minor. I have done it myself on two hitches I installed on other cars. The B8 hitch also looks like a simple , no drill installation.

I'm just about to install one on my Avant(non S-line)This DIY link includes a photo. I don't really like the exposure of the tube, but I need a hitch.

Not very pretty. I had a Hidden Hitch on my GTI that only looked a little better, though.

There is an alternative at about $650. Westphalia makes one that will fit up behind the valence with a detachable ball assembly that "plugs" into the bottom of the hidden frame.
