Default what's "appropriate" oil consumption?

My 2010 A4 with the 2.0 T engine was using a lot of oil, so I took it in at about 20,000 miles, and they did the level 1 repair. Now, at 28,000 miles, it still seems to be using a lot of oil (maybe about 2000 miles per quart), so I took it to the dealer recently and was told that they topped off my oil and wanted me to bring it back in two months (which would be at the 35K service interval) and they would "test" it then.

I emailed Audi America after my service visit and they called back. The rep said she didn't know what "normal oil consumption" was for my car: "It depends on the engine and the mileage."

So has anyone else gotten a clear answer from Audi about what is "normal"?

I have some bad news for you. In the past, Audi has claimed 1 qt per 1000 miles is normal. To which I say my %##. My ancient AWM 1.8T with 250+Kmiles on it burns about half a quart every 10,000 miles. Now that's normal for such an old engine.

The manual says 1 qt per 1,200 miles. Excessive? I think so. Audi is running in front of a billion dollar freight train concerning these engines.

I have been contacted by several lawyers asking me if I have had excessive oil consumption. I suspect they are gathering ammunition for a class action suit.

There is a lot of talk about excessive oil consumption, but aside from needing to add oil to the engine often, is this causing a real problem ?

I agree that it can be inconvenient, but are the engines breaking down because of that ?

I am wondering if people are complaining, because they have to spend money on oil or is there more severe consequences to this high consumption ?

I think most people complain because this may be the first car that they ever owned in modern times that consumes oil prior to a 5000 mile oil change. Not the money or the inconvenience but because it is touted as superior German technology , it should not happen. I think it is just that simple.

I'd be curious how burning 1qt per 1500 miles affects your emissions. For instance we don't get new cars smogged for 6 years in California.... all all these B8's going to fail when their time is up?

At least the CAT and exhust won't rust if it is coated in oil.

I think somehow oil does not affect the smog test as much as we would guess.

But burning oil may shorten the life of the cat, foul up the PCV system, and perhaps build up gunk on some other components. But I say this as a hopefully educated guess, not as fact.

FYI one of my kids stopped down with the A4. It's a 2009 with 34,000 miles on it. I just checked the oil both on the MMI and the dip stick and it is down 1/2 quart. I changed the oil 2600 miles ago so it's on course to use 1 quart in 5000 miles. Live-able but not like-able. Now my Lexus is coming up on 20,000 and due for an oil change. Checked the dip stick and it is full and clean.
