It's something people can easily visualize, probably that's why it's used in many reviews.
B8 A4 trunk is about 12 cubic feet - I can tell comparing to other cars that advertise 14-16 cubic feet. However, A4 has one of the most usable trunks. The trunk lid goes all the way to the bottom allowing you to actually load bulky objects. I have carried disassembled tables, 8 foot pieces of lumber, 80 lb bags of cement, etc...(no golf bags). Just lower the back seat and most bulky objects will slide right in. Comparing to my dads Acura TL - it has a larger trunk but opening is narrow and awkward. Large items don't fit trough the opening and you have to lift heavy objects all the way.

I specifically wanted folding read seats because my A4 is the Christmas-tree-mobile. My wife's car has just a ski pass-through.
A 6-7' tree fits easily.
I also managed to fit a set of tires. You would think that it shouldn't be a problem, but it's a tight squeeze. I have tirerack ship the tires to my house and then I take them to the dealer for installation - don't want to take the risk with indie shops given that it was $120 at the dealer last time.
