Default 2018/2019 map update

I haven't seen any mention of this here yet... but it appears that the North American 2018/2019 map update is now out! Downloading it now...

New Audi owner here, what's the process on downloading map updates? Is there a charge for the updates?

The first... five?... are free. Go to www.audi.ca (or I presume www.audiusa.com if in the US), sign up for myAudi, then go into the 'Audi connect services' section and there's a Java app that will download the map update onto an SD card for you.

So do I need to supply my own SD card? Which slot does it plug into?

Yes. Make sure to get 16GB or bigger. It goes into one of the two SD card slots in the glove box.

In theory I think it might be possible to do the update using a USB flash drive, I'm not sure.

Thanks...download is finishing and putting it on a 32GB SanDisk card. Does the SD card need to be left in or does it transfer to the HD?

What files/folders need to be transferred over? See a Mib1 and Mib2 folder and then a .md5 file which says its a doc that cannot be opened. Sorry for all the questions but don't want to copy over stuff that's not needed.

I would strongly recommend you just have the Java tool download directly to the SD card rather than try to move things over. I tried the moving over method once, I must have forgotten some hidden files or something, because it didn't work...

When you run the update feature in the MMI it will copy all the data over. Takes about 30-35 minutes in my car with a Samsung EVO 32GB SD card.
