How long does plastic drain plug last?
I always change my oil by extracting it from the dipstick tube. Therefore, I don't have to touch the drain plug. ECS Tuning always sends me a new plug, but I never use it.
But now I'm wondering how long that piece of plastic is going to last? Will it eventually degrade?

I think the plastic plug itself should be fine. It's the O-ring might loose the sealing capability over the time. Mines is 6 yeas 80k miles now and hasn't touched the plug yet. The transmission has the same plastic plug and the interval is 40k miles. Imaging a car is strictly serviced in a dealer through its life and I would think the dealer will never change the plug. How long? Who knows.

If you extract the oil, the plastic plug will last forever, assuming you use the underpanel

Good quality O rings tend to be pretty durable as long as they are not disturbed; but, they do tend to deform in place. Remove the drain plug and chances are O ring will re seal poorly because of the deformation. The actual plastic drain plug will probably last as long as your plastic intake manifold.

That's why the plastic oil pan plug is marked replace if removed. The o-ring is not separately cataloged, so you just replace the whole plug.
06L 103 801 - for the 1.4T and 2.0T - https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...lug/06l103801/
06L 103 801 D - for the 2.0 TDI T98 - https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...ug/06l103801d/
Don't know how they actually differ, but there's likely some reason for differing part revs.

SMac, Blauparts.com stated that the plug for the oil pan is same as the plugs for the transmission (drain and fill). However, their parts numbers are different (06L103801 for oil pan and 0CK321439A for ATF pan). Are they really same thing with two different parts number or really two different size? I am looking at change the ATF and has a bunch of oil drain plugs on hand (never used them with top change). Hate to waste them if can be used (surely not for the purpose of saving few bucks).

The transmission fluid pan drain and fill plugs were 0CK 321 439 until Jul '17, and then 0CK 321 439 A after that. They sure do look similar: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...ug/0ck321439a/
But without setting them all side by side and confirming they are in fact the same, can't really say. At a few bucks each, it's a cheap experiment for whoever wants to confirm. I simply don't have a need to order B9 pan plugs. But I imagine any dealership parts department has these in spades for the service department. They might have some insight, or at least have the items for physical review if one dropped by. It sounds like Blauparts says they are the same minus the screw bit slot in the top. And the ECS pics seem to support that, Torx slot on the 0CK, flat slot on the 06L.
But something just seems different about the spiral thread between the three. Really would require them side by side to confirm.

Thanks, SMac! Looks I can order couple of them along with the ATF fluid from ECS. Guess I will have a small bag of oil pan plugs laying around. I ordered them before my first oil change thought those were needed. But switched to the dip stick hole extraction method right at beginning.

I'm getting a shipment of parts from FCP Euro today. I can check. Oil change kit/DSG service kit. Should get me 3 plugs to compare. 1 for oil, 2 for the DSG.
