I'm a dinosaur from the era of change oil every 3,000 miles which has served me well with all of my cars (predominantly Nissan, Volvo and Acura over last 30 years). I've graduated to 5K intervals with our /18 A4 and /15 A6 3.0T as well as the /13 Volvo S80T6 we have in our little fleet. Consumption on both Audis is negligible over 5K miles and I agree with PghRich -- a quart in 600-700 miles is not the norm with these cars at least when they are relatively new (A4 14,000 miles and A6 just under 40,000 miles). Having said that it is noteworthy that my "extra" car -- 2004 Acura TL with 177,000 miles on the clock uses no oil between 3,500 oil change intervals on.......either semi-synthetic or pure dino oil sourced at WalMart for quite a bit less than $20.00 for a five quart jug........... Just saying. Similarly the Volvo does not use any oil between 5K change intervals. I do agree with ljpzap that I would not keep a car that uses a quart of oil every 1,200 miles unless the thing had well north of 100K miles. I love the way our Audis drive (in particular the A4) but I have little faith that I could stomach keeping one for the long haul. A4 is leased so in 2 years it goes away. A6 is owned but I will not keep it more than 6-6.5 years / 60-65,000 miles -- too risky.

Best,
Jeff

My 2009 A4 burned a quart of oil every 1,200 miles. I believe there was a TSB issued for that problem and my car was serviced by Audi at no cost to me.

My 2017 A4, however, seems to use no oil between changes. Then again, I change my own oil and filter midway between warranty oil changes because I take a lot of short trips and don't let the engine warm up to maximum efficiency.

As far as I'm concerned, Audi did things right this time. My B9 is the most trouble-free car I've ever owned.

I am truly hoping it is just a "top off" issue during the last change, because I really do like the car a lot and want to keep it. My buddy had a BMW 750 with the V8 and he burned a quart a month doing about 1,000 miles. BMW wrote a tech bulletin on it very similar to what you showed for the VW manual, but my nephew who works in service for BMW just simply said (like you) that it was written to cover them for warranty claims. For them it is a known problem. I am encouraged that you write you are not seeing oil burn and will hope I did not get an "oil burner".
By the way, what oil are using ? Brand and Weight ?.
Again my dealer said my car has Castrol Full Synthetic (Syntec) 5w40. I see you can also use 0w40, but wasn't sure if I should change it out to the 0w40.

I am using Castrol Edge Professional 5w40 synthetic.

i used Liqui Moly 5-40 in my B9. A little more expensive (not much though) but a really great 5-40 oil. My engine honestly ran more smoothly.

ljpzap, good chance this is a top off issue. As you are likely aware the A4s going back quite a few years had horrible oil burning issues but so far sounds like most of the B9 cars don't have this issue. Might be a bit early to definitively declare the B9 motors "cured" but here's hoping. Not sure if you have a dipstick or not -- if not get one from ECS Tuning. I don't trust the MMI and my experience has been that the guys changing the oil whether at dealer or indy aren't as careful as I'd like when it comes to being precise in filling the sump. I've had my A6 overfilled and underfilled a couple of times so suggest next time you have oil changed you check it immediately thereafter with dipstick and make sure properly topped up. Going forward from there will tell the story. Hope your car is not using any appreciable amount.

Best,
Jeff

Never had to top up the oil in any pf the Audi's I've owned, A3 1.4 and now the A4. Any previous issues with a similar engine are not present with the current version...

I’ve had my ‘17 B9 for over three years since buying it new. I use it daily but almost all of my driving is short around town, stop and go trips and I currently have 12,000 miles on it. I change my oil annually (AudiCare) at the dealer so my oil has been changed three times. I always am aware to get the oil temperature up to normal operating temperature every trip but sometimes it doesn’t get there.

I check the oil in the MMI regularly, just out of years of ingrained practice checking oil. My oil level has never been down from the full level.

I’ve had my ‘17 B9 for 32 months since buying it new. Just completed the 50k mile AudiCare service. My oil level has never been down from full in MMI.
