USA: Interested in a B9 FWD with 252hp. How do I know if it's not Ultra?

But it's not the "Ultra" model with the B cycle engine....

Never said it is..?
My point was that the 252hp engine is available for both AWD and FWD.. at least in US and Europe

OK, I can say I haven't noticed a 252hp model with FWD. Many of the FWD cars were CVT and they've done away with that. The majority of FWD Audis in the USA got sent to warmer climates.

Perhaps Doom can search for a FWD car with the lower fuel economy rating if he is looking for 252HP. The Ultra cars picked up 5 MPG or so on the EPA Highway cycle due to lower specific output engine.
Void, what years do you believe the CYMC engine was available in FWD version in the USA?

OK, thanks, Void. My primary concern for our newest member, @Doom878 , is that many of the selling dealers he will look at, whether an Audi dealer or the little corner car lot, will not know what they are selling and could cause him to go through much effort only to find the car is not as they have described. I wish there was an easier way for Doom to identify this unicorn FWD model with the good engine in it. Maybe @SMac770 or @SYMAWD can share some input on identifying this model.

Looking at the B9 engines, we have:
2.0T "ultra" aka Gen3B (B-cycle), EU6 emissions engine code CVKB (140kW), US emissions engine code DPBA (190hp, 188hp starting MY19).
2.0T aka Gen3 (ie, normal 2.0T), EU6 emissions engine code CYRB (185kW), US emissions engine code CYMC (252hp, 248hp starting MY19).
The two engines are obviously different on visual inspection. Part of the redesign of the EA888 to support the B-cycle was to move the variable valve lift from the exhaust to the intake. Not to mention, the engine code is on the sticker on the front of the upper timing cover. So if you have physical access to the car, which engine it has is easily confirmed.
Here is a video shot of the 252hp CYMC: youtu.be/OtSwg5lCUT8?t=50 Notice the intake side of the head is clean.
Compared to this pic of the 190hp DPBA, which has the eight VVL actuators sticking out:
On the 252hp CYMC, the VVL actuators are on the exhaust side, same as the prior B8 2.0T engines, as seen here: youtu.be/OtSwg5lCUT8?t=58 (ok, so you can't really see the actuator shafts, the new engine has a ton of wiring crap over it now, but you can see all the plugs)
That said, if you're not in person to physically inspect the vehicle, you can still determine what you're buying from the VIN alone. Engine, transmission, fwd vs quattro, and trim (premium, premium plus, prestige) are all embedded into the VIN and can be determined using Audi's VIN decoder charts. They will all start WAU.
2017 fourth character (I used A4Q rather than type quattro out repeatedly)
automatic:
G - A4 premium, A4 ultra premium
K - A4 ultra premium w/ Season of Audi package (?)
L - A4 premium plus, A4 ultra premium plus
M - A4 prestige
A - A4Q premium
D - A4Q premium w/ Season of Audi package
E - A4Q premium plus
F - A4Q prestige
manual:
N - A4Q premium
P - A4Q premium plus
R - A4Q prestige
2018 dropped the G and A premium letters, renaming the premium w/ season of audi pkg letters as just premium. No idea what if any implication that might mean. It's premium trim, who cares. So you end up with K/L/M (A4 auto), D/E/F (A4Q auto), and N/P/R (A4Q manual).
2019 changed things up again it seems, this time no manuals are listed, which the 2019 brochure seems to support. And the letters for the A4 trims are changed, now G/H/J for A4 auto, though D/E/F remains for A4Q auto.
On to engines. The fifth character. This is easy. M is the 190hp DPBA and N is the 252hp CYMC. For MY19, these hp numbers revised down to 188hp and 248hp.
2019 brochure seems clear, FWD is 188hp and quattro is 248hp.
2018 order guide supports the same. A4 sedan 2.0T "ultra" FWD S-tronic with engine code M. And then A4 sedan 2.0T quattro, S-tronic or manual, with engine code N.
So what happened for 2017? Who knows. It's AoA with a new product roll out. Anything is possible.
You want to know what engine is in the car, look at it. You want to know what should be in the car, get the VIN.

Another easy way (beside quattro badges) to verify if it's a FWD, is to check the pr codes (found on service book or in luggage compartiment, where the spare tire / battery is located or by a dedicated VIN search).
1X0 ATA Front wheel drive
1X1 ATA Four wheel drive
1X2 ATA Rear wheel drive
1X3 ATA Four-wheel drive for electric drive
1X4 ATA Drive layout 4x2
1X5 ATA Drive layout 6x2
1X6 ATA Drive layout 6x4
1X7 ATA Drive layout 8x4
1X8 ATA Drive layout 8x2
1X9 ATA Preparation for four-wheel drive
I have 1X0.
The pr-code for the 2.0 252hp engine is DQ5 (4-cylinder SI engine 2.0 l/185 kW TFSI, homogeneous; base engine is TW6/T2H/T2G/T0I/T8Y)
