2014 Audi A6 C7 - Sound Unavailable Issue
2014 Audi A6 C7 3.0 TFSI Quattro with Bose sound system
I've thoroughly read over 50 posts related to this issue, but found no solution. If anyone can help, would be much appreciated.
XM, FM and AM seem to be tuning to all the channels and displaying channel information. CD seems to be playing. Bluetooth is able to connect. Memory Card seems to load tracks. Navigation system working properly.
However, no sound from speakers for any of these systems. Get "currently unavailable" when I try to adjust the volume. Voice control from steering wheel not functioning at all.
This issue started 2 weeks ago, while driving at local speed of 30 MPH, using iPhone on Bluetooth, sound cut off without any warning. Didn't hit any bump, no rain, nothing sporadic. No sound since then.
Had one brief moment of sound returned, but lost again immediately 10 seconds later. Wife has been driving car to and from work so plenty of time given for the issue to resolve itself, but no luck yet.
- Performed MMI reset using "three button press". No effect after reset.
- Checked all fuses in left/right cockpit and right side trunk. All pass visual check and multi meter check.
- Checked connectors on Bose Amp and Digital Sound Unit in the trunk. No visual corrosion or breakage. Optical cord emitting red light for both of these systems. Amp heats up when audio is attempted to be played (Amp getting power?).
- Poured gallons of water near closed sunroof. Checked for wetness in Amp/Sound Unit area in trunk immediately and every half an hour for 3 hours. No wetness present. No signs of water leakage
- Tried running "Optical Bus Diagnostics" in VCDS and received "cannot reach system".
- Ran auto-scan with VCDS and received the below.

Just a stab in the dark. Since it happened while using bluetooth, have you tried deleting the bluetooth settings in the mmi? Maybe the system is hung somehow, thinking it is still in call mode via bluetooth. (I know a complete wild guess.)

The 5F module is the central "brain" of the entertainment system. It's possible that module is the culprit and needs to be replaced. Before going down that path though, I would try resetting all of the settings to the defaults in the MMI and start over including deleting your phone BT profile.

I've tried deleting the Bluetooth settings, along with all other settings in MMI and then resetting the MMI. No luck.
I also tried unplugging battery for an hour, but no luck with that either.
I didn't drive the car last week. Today I turned in car and sound was working as normal, but then went out in about 5 minutes.
I'm wondering if the actual sound package/radio went bad or if there is some bad grounding/wiring.
does anyone know how to to test the sound system for faults?

I had similar issue with my A6. it would mostly occur in cold weather below like 35 degrees. it'd not be there. then after driving for a bit, if I stopped for gas and shut car off it'd be ok when start back up. it eventually gave out and I had to have the unit replaced. i had to replace the center console as well as the unit in the trunk to restore back to functionality. it's not an inexpensive venture either.

no water or any other damage. it just expired I guess.
the guy that works on my Audi is a Sr. tech that works for Audi dealer, but he does work on the side. labor and parts rate much less, and he knows the cars well.

Probably a long shot but maybe there is a short in a speaker or connector that's tripping overload protection in the output amp, assuming it has protection. Try systematically disconnecting speakers and test it.

I opened the amp/digital sound package unit and don't see any visible damage to the circuit. Is it possible that the unit is damaged, but it doesn't show any signs?
