Can 2017 Apple Car Play Be Retrofitted to 2016?

Again, I've seen no evidence where the 2017 hardware is exactly the same as the 2016. Perhaps it is and Audi will provide an update to the software to allow Car Play and Android Auto. I just wouldn't count on it based on their past history with these kinds of things. Of course, a third party could step up and integrate either or both into the MMI but of course, that would require licensing from Apple.

I'm the OP. I checked with my Audi service advisor and she said that no retrofit is possible because the wiring is different. They could be right, then again it took only a few minutes to get the answer. I'm not sure how much research they put into it.

The parts guys at my dealer show that the MMI hardware part numbers for the 2016 and 2017 are exactly the same. Tech is looking at the wiring diagrams to see if there is anything different.....

Any updates on this??? I have a 2016 Audi A7 and I have the OBeleven scanner and I want to see if I need to get another module to retrofit to get android auto. Let me know if there is any additional parts or just reprogramming needed. Thanks!

It's actually Android Auto I'm after but it seems to be covered by the same option - hoping it's just a software upgrade but the dealers don't seem to know anything.

Interesting. I just emailed Carista Support and inquired whether they knew if it was possible to do the same for CarPlay via the module and a future release of their app.

If true, it would be awesome news for all the '16 owners and something I've been hoping for. I'm fairly familiar with the way CarPlay is developed and essentially it's a way for the phone to take over the car screen, theres no logic or computing required on the cars behalf other than transmit the inputs of the user and allow the phone to control the screen output. So it should be fairy straight forward and done with little hardware changes, if any at all.
I do wonder though how the implementation is done with Audis in general, because we don't have touch screens. So far only cars I've been able to play with CarPlay had touchscreen. I'm sure it can be controlled by the **** and buttons on the center console but just curious how it practically works (maybe some 17' owners out there can chime in on that?).
