Default Exterior Lighting For Newby

2014 A6.
I have limited knowledge of the front lights.
During daylight hours when parked, the DRLs are on as well as the headlight, or is that a parking light?
When I return from a ride, I see that only the DRL is on but that other light was off.
Is this how it should work?

Which light package do you have and what position is your headlight switch in? I leave mine on Auto. During daylight, just the led strip is on. Once it's dark enough, the headlights come on automatically. Sometimes when I pull into the garage, the headlights will come on and stay on for a couple of minutes. This is adjustable in your MMI setting.

I also keep the switch on Auto. I thought it was odd that the headlight came on during a sunny evening.
I must add that I was also making adjustments with my VagCom and puzzled that the light came on even thought I made no such changes.

There is a setting in the MMI for when to turn your headlights on. As I recall it is a aggressive, medium, late kind of options...maybe yours is set for aggressive/early?

If you light switch position is in "auto" and you start your car indoor, the headlight will come on automatically. If you drive your car outside before the MMI fully boot up, you headlight will stay on regardless - that is my experience.

However, if you wait until after the MMI is fully up, i.e. it is showing the radio station or media info, then the auto headlight feature function properly, that is my experience regardless the setting is set for "early, medium, or late", mine is set to medium.

Try it and see if that works for you.
