Default How much should new wheels and tires cost? - 2016 Audi A6 3.0 TDI in Minnesota

As you see in my other thread, I'm looking to give my A6 a softer ride. I think I want the 18 inch wheels with Continental tires. I can easily see how much the tires cost.

I was at the dealer yesterday (EGR getting replaced today under warranty). I asked what the price range would be for new wheels and tires. He said "oh about $4000-$5000". Is that really the cost? I figure I'm going to pay $250 per tire.

I see wheels on tirerack for $200-$400 per wheel.

Where are they coming up with the $4000-$5000 price tag? Is there something else I need to buy besides the wheel/rim and the tires? Is there some large amount of work it takes to put these on?

Where do you suggest shopping for wheels/rims? Are there brands that are highly recommended? I'm going with black because my car has the black option.

Thanks for helping me out. I'm not a car guy.

$250 is a little steep for UHP or GT all seasons. A good Michelin or Continental all season is about 210$ per tire. Wheels from Audi are over $1100 per wheel, which is why they are coming up with almost $5000. A reasonable price for aftermarket midrange wheels or used OEM ones with new, good tires would be about $2200-$3400 (depending when wheels you get). Also, it will be about $250-$350 for installation, alignment, and balancing.

OEM wheels done by a dealership will always be super expensive. Same with tires.

You can find wheels with all sorts of price points. Our wheels start at $375/ea and move up from there. Size, finish and wheel technology usually play the biggest role in the pricing of a wheel. Our Flow Forged line starts at $445/ea for a 19x8.5 up to $675/ea for a 22x12. Our run in the mill set will run you ~$1700 for a set.

So I can't buy the wheels I see on Tirerack like in this link? Manufacturers are Enkei, OZ, Sport Tuning, MSW, etc.

Do I need to buy something else besides the wheels and tires? It appears that I could buy 18 inch wheels for $250 each and tires for $200 each. Can I really do this for $1800 plus install cost instead of $4000-$5000 at the dealer?

You can buy any wheel/tire combo you'd like. The dealer offers their products at a premium because they are genuine Audi parts. People own 100K+ cars and mount them with replica wheels that cost less than 1K for the set.

Your only concern should be the fitment of the wheels/tires you purchase, not what the dealership quoted you. Hell, they charge 3x what an oil change cost from JiffyLube down the street.

Yes you can buy from tirerack or even discounttiredirect.com. Select what wheel and tire you like. You can also call them for confirmation of fit. At least if you get tire/wheel pkg from either of these vendors, they don't charge for mount and balance and usually free shipping. All you have to do is install them and sell your old ones. A6 models has lots of options. Forget the dealer unless you don't mind the price and you have to have oem, then you have to pay the price. People do sell their oems in the classifieds here or other Audi forums. But its a bit of a hassle. Tirerack or discounttiredirect.com is where I get my tires/wheels. Mostly winter pkgs.

Only my opinion but I like to stick with OEM wheels for a couple of reasons including looks and fitment. My /15 3.0T has sport suspension with 19" wheels. I'm here in MI and needed a set of 18s for winter tires. I saw an ad on craigslist if I recall correctly for a very lightly used set of OEM 18s with all season Conti Pro-Contacts which were hardly used. Cost me $700 and I drove to outskirts of Chicago to pick them up. They turned out to be perfect and in the process those Contis fit wife's Volvo S80 so it was a total no-brainer. If you like OEM look and don't want to risk non-OEM quality issues then comb AW, Audizine, Craigslist, etc. and see what turns up. I plan on saying goodbye to my A6 in approximately 2 years and at that time will sell the wheels/winter tires. Guessing somewhere out there someone must be doing that now. Just a suggestion for your consideration.

Best,
Jeff
