The miles to empty calculation is dynamic - it adjusts based on the last x amount of miles driven and its computed mpg to determine distance remaining. I've experimented and it changes based on recent driving mpg calculated from the car's computer. Not too accurate as the MPG calculation always seems to be 1.5 mpg more optimistic than real world for me.
I haven't seen the DTE readout add miles but I will sometimes see the distance to empty actually not change for awhile if I go from a low mpg to a high mpg driving situation for some distance.

We switched cars for 3 weeks now and I can tell you the miles remaining when I fill up her car has been slowly creeping up from 410 to 445 and increasing. I can't explain it, nothing done is scientific, its only a guess. Possibly its the way we differ in driving or traffic but that doesn't explain the huge discrepancy in miles remaining between both A6. We both use a mileage log app on our phones during each fill up. I am consistently in the 21-23mpg while hers is in the 17-19 mpg.
Sorry, but I totally missed the irony in your original post - I read it and thought "this guy thinks 'Audi has his and hers sized fuel tanks?' "

Im my head as I am driving on a trip I add the "miles to empty" to the miles since last fillup (the trip odometer which I re-set each time) and as long as it is like 480-510 I know I am driving my usual style and getting my usual mpg. Does that make sense?

That's one way, I guess. I do a similar thing by keeping an eye on the "Long" and "Short" MPG readouts. If it doesn't stay about 21 mpg or more, I know I'm being too aggressive with in town driving. On the highway, same thing at 25 mpg or more. If I'm in an Andretti mood, I just don't care or pay attention to the mileage.

I apparently have been in an Andretti mood lately. I look forward to the I25 on ramps now so I can grin so hard my face hurts. For those not from CO, 25 is a freeway with a 75mph speed limit that pretty much everyone ignores. If you aren't going at least 80, you will be unceremoniously run over. 85 is a nice speed to merge into traffic.

Lets just say my mileage has not been as good lately, but my smile quotient is up.

I cant imagine how hard the S6 guys smile...

haha, different cultures...

Reminds me of a trip to Japan where they have vending machines that sell beer. I asked how they prevent underage kids from buying beer. They told me that because it was the wrong thing to do, that nobody does it.

You guys got me in the mood for some Russian Mileage Roulette. Today I went until the red low fuel light came on, and continued driving 20 miles until I got to my favorite gas station. The fill-up was 18.06 gallons, so I calculate about 1.74 gallons left.

I felt like Kramer in the Saab 900 in the dealership episode...but I guess I had another 30 miles or so left in the tank.

Looks like your experience and mine correlate well. Good to know (not that any of us should make a habit of driving deep into the "red zone").

I've noticed that the warning light in my DD comes on sooner. It used to be when I had 1.5 gallons left. Now it's closer to 2.5 gallons. It could be the sulfur in the gas, it could be the ethanol or it could be the aging sensor.

I rely more on my http://www.scangauge.com/ to tell me how much fuel has been used since my last fill up. It usually shows usage within a couple tenths of a gallon. I keep it on instantaneous MPG's and tank MPG's for normal running around. If the car is going in for service, I'll clear the trip info and I can check the highest speed and RPM's when I get the car back. It plugs into the OBDII port and reads the computer data.

It also lets me read and clear engine codes.

After I filled up today, the miles remaining said 610 miles!

The 2.0T FWD is great on gas. I've averaged 30.1 mpg over the past 1,637 miles.
