Steering defective do not drive Vehicle
Hi all, Just got the dreadful message" Steering Defective Do not drive Vehicle" on my 2012 Audi A6 3.0T Quad with 73K. I am kind of stranded on a trip. Car wont even starts and parked brake is locked and can not be disable. Any ideal I can bypassed this to limb home? Not sure if I disconnect the battery will help clear it and l at least let me start the car but will probably introduce other issues with it but I am desperate now. Thanks in advance.

I searched around and it looks like the steering column need to be taken out to replace the control module. I will search for DIY replacement. Please let me know if anyone have done it or have a link to a DIY. Thanks again in advance.

I had this same issue. Steering was VERY STIFF for about a week and then finally ended up getting it towed to dealership because steering wheel fully locked up on day. Dealership installed a full new steering rack assembly (Our cars dont have the traditional power steering, its all electronics). It was a little over $4K for this repair!!

Does anyone else have any experience with this issue? I have both 02811 and 02823 codes and "do not drive vehicle "steering defective". The car won't start. @MrCarMAN, do you have a list of parts Audi replaced when they did yours? I'm wondering if they truly replaced the steering assembly or the control module that is hooked to the assembly.

I guess I don't understand what you mean by start/stop 5x. For my car, It basically doesn't power up. The brake pedal is stiff. When I try to "start" the car, nothing turns on and it displays the error. No other lights flip on.

I never got a reply on this; maybe it worked on older cars but on my 2012 A7 (C7) it did not. I was able to resolve it on my own. In my case the car worked perfect one day and then wouldn't start the next. With the codes thrown, I ordered a new ignition control lock module from audiusaoemparts.com. I took the steering wheel column apart using the instructions from ersawin. After putting everything back together, I found a company out of the UK that remote code the module for around $150.00 if I remember. I had to by a vas 5054 clone but Audi wanted $450 just to code the module. After the new module was coded to the car, she start right up.
Honestly, I spent more time trying to get up the nerve than actually doing it. Take lots of pictures, of all different directions so you know how to put things back together and do it all in one go if you can. If I had to do it again, I could probably do it in 2 hours or less. The first time through, took me a bit, especially putting it back together but I had a few whiskeys in me and it was pouring rain outside and I kept forgetting one thing or another and having to do it all over (where lots of pictures help).
