Is it tough on the transmission shifting into sport mode?

"Shifting" the transmission into "Sport" mode is not actually doing any shifting. Doing this is simply changing the transmission mapping into a slightly sportier setting (it will hold onto gears longer, shift later, etc.). It should not increase wear by any noticeable amount. Im willing to bet a car that is driven hard in regular drive would be more prone to damage than a car that is driven regularly in "sport" mode. In conclusion, I agree with all of the other responses in this thread.

I think that you can guarantee that mpg’s will be lower in sport mode due to higher rpm’s in most gears and higher rpm’s will increase wear but I have no idea how significantly wear will be affected. If you lease or turn it in before 60 k miles then, go ahead, and drive the heck out of it in sport mode. If you plan on keeping the car to 150 k miles then using sport mode all the time will probably cost you more.

I'm sure he was suggesting that Nightwind_Hawk was about to have his mind blown by how easy it is to put this car into sport mode. I know I was when I accidentally discovered it! I was driving through town and just happened to pull back on the shifter without even thinking much about it, then I noticed it was dropping and holding gears a lot more aggressively than I was use to and I realized what I had done. Now I use it all the time and love the feature. To me this makes it more of a drivers car to be able to flick it into and out of sport without having to deal with any menus. Same thing goes for traction control, I had a Mercedes rental for a week while on vacation and could not find where to turn off the traction control. I ended up googling it and found it was buried like three layers into a menu, which I consider BS. My BMW had the traction control button in almost the same location as this Audi and to bury it in a menu like MB did was a real turn off.
And as far as the comment about lower MPG with sport mode? You may get lower MPG but you will have higher SPG's (smiles per gallon).
