When it gets out that America auto makers are also doing similar things (gasp!) the EPA/government will suddenly decide its probably not a good idea to continue to pursue this any longer or at least not in its hippie induced rage it is going at right now.

VW will survive this as there are so many other reason to buy euro. A US. auto maker would be destroyed, which as we have seen, the government wont let happen.

The bottom line is VW shouldn't have signed on the certification line when it came to their diesels. 'merica didn't hold a gun to their head saying "you must bring diesel". If you can meet the standards, welcome. If you cannot, don't bring the cars here. Comparing this to death and safety violations is a false premise argument.

This is not a time for VW to renegotiate emissions standards they evidently had no desire to meet initially. This is not bitching and whining, its the law. If you don't like it, then lobby your representatives to change it.
Not quite true. That is the case for NOx but not CO2 or CO. This is why large European cars ( and now some new Porsche models for example) are coming with smaller, 4 Cyl engines. Their policy is to reduce emissions wherever they are sold. ( assuming they follow the law!)

I agree. A lot of Americans think the tree-hugging and other liberal things have gone way out of control here. Truth is Europe is way more liberal in virtually (if not every) way. Look at Belgium where the police searches are hampered by laws prohibit them from doing raids certain days or times of day. In the US we’d think that is crazy.

Fair point. I thought we were focusing on NOx (the root of the scandal) though.

I always thought 4 cyl engines took off in Europe because its like $56/ltr for gas.

There are many reasons 4 cylinder engines are used.

1. Cars are taxed on displacement in many countries. This is why many engines are just under 2.0 liters.

2. 4 cyl engines provide the best combination of weight, efficiency, NVH and cost compared to others.

2. More recently, the requirement to reduce emissions is why we see smaller and, more often 4 cyl engines in Porsches, A6s, 5 series and now E class cars. Gasoline in Germany is about $1.40/liter or about $5.60/gallon.
