'00 A6 4.2 Transmission Clunk
My transmission(78M miles), on acceleration, clunks at approximately 30-45mph when it shifts and then shifts to "limp mode", with a solid red bar in the gear indicator area. If I put the car in neutral and turn it off it resets and is fine. The dealership said "we can put a new transmission in for $5,000 + labor". I am wondering if there are any simpler/cheaper solutions, I found rebuilts for $2,000. Give me your thoughts.

Look at prior posts on this, including mine. More info inside...
Search the archives for "clunk or "thump" and "transmission" and you will start to find a bunch. There is better info on the D2 A8 board than the C5 board in general, and several really knowledgable people reside there such as "Tozo".
In my case with a 2000 4.2, after endless tracing, it was a bad output speed sensor broken wire problem--the wire that goes into the tranny far back on the passenger side very close to the cat. converter. Had I had it rebuilt, it would have been money down the toilet. Well over a year later, it has never missed a shift since I finally found the problem.
I also had the transmission valve body rebuilt and I pulled and installed it myself. It can be done pretty easily with the tranny still in the car. About $500 for the rebuild at a certified ZF shop and about a week turn around. Brought the shift quality back to new, though the broken wire was the true culprit.
FWIW, the posts go down various paths--torque converter issues, internal tranny issues, fluky ones (like mine), and nobody really knows exactly the real problem (unfortunately, the majority). Many post ideas also start with do a fluid and filter change as a basic first shot to try to get it better.

Best way would be to drain fluid and check for damage (and check fluid for excessive
amounts of metal particles.) All internal moving parts should also be checked for play, etc, to make sure that everything is still within specs. Of course, before you start taking things apart, bring it to the dealer. The diagnostic fee (at my dealer at least) is $115. That's not too bad, considering how much money you may save if you find a problem before irreversible damage is done.

Thanks for the response. Two Audi mechanic (one dealer and one indy) are both at a loss as they have
never heard of this happening. Sounds like a gear slipping when under power at take-off, especially on turns.
