i recently had a similar noise upon start-up, coming somewhere from the power steering as it would change when i turned the wheel - turns out a short, curved piece of rubber hose (i believe underneath the diverter valves) got a kink in it. originally thought it was the pump or something else, luckily it was just this hose - a $50 hose of course since it has the audi rings on it....definitely check that out

Was there an equivalent, non-OEM replacement?

i'm not sure there was, my guy usually gives me the choice if there is a non oem option
