'01 A6 2.8 Quattro Wierd no start

Thanks for the replies. Both times that it wouldn't start, it cranked over fine but never fired. I noticed that there was no whirring noise under the hood (I assume to be the fuel pump)during this no start situation that is normally there with the key on. No flashing key symbol and no alarm. After dorking around 10 or 15 minutes, it started up fine. My dad bought this car new and says it has never failed to start before.

Vagcom?? Is that a dealer only system or might some other shops have one?

Whirring noise from fuel pump would come from the rear...fuel pump is in the gas tank.

Yes Audi/VW dealer have the tool that will let them scan every part of the vehicle, the independent shops don't have Vagcom unless they are Audi/VW shop , but other have universal tool that will only scan Engine Code and transmission code, that's all they have access to, VAGCOM have access to every module on the car and can verify all the codes recorded in each module. you can check this site www.ross-tech.com for more information.
Call Audi dealer and ask them how much they charge for Diagnostics, and look at yellowpages and find independent shop in your area that does audi and VW and ask them how much they charge for diagnostics and if they have VAGCOM or Audi approved scan tool , if they do and charge less go to them and have them scan the car...

I finally got it scanned. engine codes: 16684 random/multiple misfire intermittent, 16706 Engine speed sensor G28 no signal intermittent, 16690 Cylinder 6 misfire intermittent

central locks: 01572 alarm triggered by door contact pass side, 01374 alarm triggered by terminal 15, 01370 alarm triggered by interior monitoring, 00955 key 1 adaptation limit surpassed intermittent, 00956 Key 2 adaptation limit surpassed intermittent, 01561 left rear door can't unlock intermittent

Mechanic seemed pretty sure it needs an engine speed sensor. Would this create the crank with no start condition? He didn't see anything in the locks that would cause this condition.

Any ideas are appreciated

yup if this is he sensor on the cam absolutely it will cause this problem. in fact I had it on my audi 90. When the sensor goes bad it will stop tthe car from strting, but once started it will not stop the engine if it goes bad. Mine went intermitent just like yours. I got one from a wrecker and threw it in. When i took mine apart i could see it was completelt worn out.

Engine speed sensor is not the cam position sensor.

If the cam pos sensor is caput, the car may not start. Not sure if the same is true for the engine speed sensor, although the ECM is using both to calculate if the timing is off.

Is the "engine speed sensor" the same thing as the "crankshaft position sensor?" I see prices from under $10 to over $100 for these. Is it worth the extra cash?
