[QUOTE=4Driver4;24296801]There is only one post above yours.[quote]

Hence I specified "not threaded view".

Please be considerate and post your responses so that they makes sense in both threaded and linear view.
I try.

But yeah, the OP did mention the ESS. Which is easy to read in non-threaded view.

OK, so we now know the whole central locking module fiasco was a wild goose chase and have narrowed the problem down to "engine speed sensor" or perhaps a fuel pump relay. Can someone tell me if the "engine speed sensor" is the same item as a crankshaft position sensor? No problem finding a crank position sensor, but not so with the engine speed sensor.

Thanks
Steve

No they are not the same. The crankshaft position sensor read a notch in the crankshaft to determine the position of the crankshaft. The speed sensor read the teeth along the flywheel. These are magnetic sensors and as we all remember from High School physics a magnet loses its magnetic properties when heated. We also remember that an AC current is created as a moving piece of metal (flywheel) passes over a magnet (speed sensor). This current/signal is used by the ECU to determine that the engine is running which will then send a signal to the fuel pump relay to allow the fuel pump to run.

Most likely the sensors were heat soaked and raising the hood allowed for the sensor to cool off. I'm betting that this only occurs on a hot engine and that the problems goes away after 10-15minutes with the hood raised. From the code reader I would replace the speed sensor.

There are two types of speed sensor available, depending if it is manual or automatic. Make sure you get the correct one.

This is not a question, just info.

It turns out that the "engine speed sensor" and "crankshaft position sensor" are the same part # on the 2001 Audi A6 Quattro automatic. I found an new OEM sensor on-line for about $60 delivered. As audiqv8 says, it is important to get the right one for your transmission.

To change the speed sensor: Remove left front wheel. Locate and remove "engine speed sensor" just in front of left front axle with 10mm socket. Remove coolant expansion tank. Locate gray connector on firewall and remove it from the bracket and disconnect. I ended up cutting the old sensor off and pulling the wire through the loom to remove it. Then fish-in the new sensor where it won't touch anything hot or moving and put everything back together.

On this model car, there is a spacer that fits under the ESS that must be removed from the old one and placed on the new one.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Even though crank and speed sensor, in this case, are the same part number, they are two separate sensors.
