19.7 gal. into a 2000 2.7T (no spillage and didn't run out of fuel)...

I've run out of gas before
Was driving all day at a DE. Had already added some fuel at the track but didn't want to buy more $7/gal.
Last session I was having a blast with a friend and knew I was low on fuel. Finally pulled in knowing I was REALLY low. Drove VERY carefully 5 miles down the road in stop & go traffic to the BP station that had 92 oct fuel. When I pulled into the gas station...DAMN! All the pumps were busy filling cars. Just after I stopped to wait...not even a sputter it died.
A few "new friends" at the gas station helped me push it up the small incline to the pump ;-)
Somehow I don't remember it being over 19 Gallons tho.
Best part...my friend with the M3 can't drive it at less that 1/2 tank because it always gets fuel starvation in the corner. The A6 has never had that problem. Another bonus point for Audi Engineering.

Yes, I've never had fuel starvation either....
And I consistently run the B5 S4 I have right down. I have also managed to put more than the book specifies into that car also.
I agree that this is down to good engineering. My Porsche is similar. Losing power in a corner can be quite dangerous.

I think this is to a large measure and old wife's tail.
I'm not saying that it has never happened, but it has never happened to me and I have run cars dry. I once ran my Porsche dry at 260 km/h and that thing must have travelled another 4-5 km while trying to suck up the last dregs of fuel in the tank (and no, I didn't make it). In fact, I had that thing on fumes a few times (we had duty free fuel in Belgium so there was a great insentive to arrive back at the border with an empty tank). I don't read any warnings in owner's manuals about running pumps dry. I don't hear about any arguments over warranty claims because of pumps having been run dry. In fact, I'm not hearing about any failures for this reason either.
