Default 1998 A6 Transmission need to be Replaced?

I have a 1998 Audi A6 with 79000 miles on it. Previous owner is dad for over 40,000 miles. I used to own a 1991 Audi 100 that I drove for 50,000 miles to 126k before that.

On Sunday, I pulled out of my apartment parking lot and my transmission broke? After having it towed to the dealer they quoted me a staggering $8,000! I don't exactly abuse my car and neither did my dad. I'm a little disappointed at such a blatant lack of durability.

If anybody thinks something else happened please do tell. Basically I hit the gas to pull out, heard a bang/thud and then the car behaves like it's in neutral when put in Drive. I turned the car off and back on, tried to shift it manually using tip-tonic, and just setting the gear, but no go. Finally I put it in reverse backed it up into the parking lot and called a tow truck.

Any ideas/suggestions/words of wisdom?

Default I'm disappointed with my car as well. I'm dealing with a possible rebuild myself

The reverse gear all of a sudden went out at 85K miles. I just spent $1150 to get the timing belt job done to keep it now I gotta spend several $1000 more. Now I'm thinking about getting rid of it.

Get the transmission fluid and filter changed 1st to see if the problem goes away

Default

A bad trans on a 2.8 is the exception, not the norm. Lucky you.

Default It's very rare to find a 2.8 owner that has replaced his/her transmission.

We changed the ATF and filter on ours when it started to shift funny at 150k. We are still good at 227k.

Change ATF, check the diff fluid levels (no one ever does this) and drive.

Default Unfortunately you need a rebuild tranny.

The forward gear (1-2-3-4) basket broke. It is rare on the 2.8. If you are in Chicago area we can rebuild it for you $3000 12mo/12k miles warranty.
