2.8L Engine Faults . . .

2.8L Engine Faults . . .
First, let me preface this by explaining that I'm a N-O-V-I-C-E (read 'invalid') when it comes to engine diagnostics. If you need help installing sunshades, I'm your man. However, when it comes to VAG-Com 'this' or VAG-Com 'that', I might as well be trying to read sanskrit off the Dead Sea scrolls.
So, with that said, any layman's explanation to what a local Indy tech found is greatly appreciated!!!!!
Symptoms: CEL on solid / strong gas smell around fuel filler door / no visible gas leaks.
1999 A6 Avant 2.8 Q
87,000 miles
VAG-COM results:
01: Engine
Controller: 4D0 907 551 AH
Component: 2.8L V6/5V Motor AT D02
Coding: 06252
Shop #: WSC 02325
2 faults found:
17927 - Camshaft Adjustment; Bank 1: Malfunction
P1519-35-00--
16826 - EVAP Emission Control Sys: Small Leak
P0442-35-10---Intermittent
Readiness: 0000 0000
Thanks in advance. Please, no nasty-grams telling me to "use the search function". I have much more fun writing than I do searching. Plus, the stuff I found I don't get.
Merry Christmas (or Happy Holidays for all the non-Christians out there).
Ciao,
Matt

I'd try replacing your gas cap first. There may be something more involved with your filler neck,
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/61325/right_cam_seal.jpg"></center><p>but caps are cheap.
The camshaft adjuster code is a little more involved. Check the connector to the cam adjuster first. Picture of the thing below. The wiring to the cam adjuster is the black rubber boot attached to the light gray connector at the top of this picture. This picture is driver's side.
Bank 1 is passenger side and the adjuster is on the back near the fire wall.
If the connection looks good, I'd clear the code and have a look in a week.
If it comes back (probably will) you are probably looking at cam adjuster replacement. Couple of hours labor, but the part is four hundred something dollars.

Hey! Use the search function you n00b!!!
hehe, what's up Matt. Just messin with ya.
Actually, I searched for the camshaft fault code you listed and a couple people had that problem after the dealer did work and forgot to plug it back in. I'm not familiar with the 2.8 but if you can find the sensor easily, try checking the connection.

Thanks for the info, Eric. FYI . . . This is what I found on the driver's side.
Is the 2" grey-ish cylinder the sensor that you say is a few hundred dollars? Is it as easy as just removing the two screws (one on opp side) and replacing?
I see the one on the pass side is buried under intake parts. A little trickier to get to.

Not quite that easy. Valve cover has to come off, you need to compress the tensioner with the
special tool (3366 IIRC - $25) and then take the whole mechanism out. The three black screws you see and one inside the valve cover need to come out. You also need to remove the intake cam to get the tensioner out. You'll need new tensioner gaskets, and valve cover gaskets.
