2001 A6 2.8 Quattro rattling sound
Hi all,
I am new here so kindly pardon my ignorance. I recently purchased a 2001 A6 2.8 Quattro with 36K miles. The moment I test drove this car, I just fell in love with it. It's drive and handling compared to some others that I test drove (1999 MB E430, 2001 BMW 325i) is beyond comparison, and after going thru 4 Honda Accords in a row (1982, 1990, 1994, 1998), this is definitely a big change.
Anyway, one small item I have noticed is that sometime, and not always, when I make a sharp turn I hear this sound -- kind of like a rattle but more like something rolled from one side to another. Seems to be coming from the front, maybe the dash. First I thought something in the glove box was rolling around but that is not the case. Almost seems like coming from the steering column area. There is no excessive play in the steering wheel and the car was inspected before I bought it (it is an off lease vehicle which seem to be available in abundance these days). So I am a little mystified. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The nearest Audi dealer here is 50 miles away so I thought I will ask here before driving down to the dealer.
Thanks,
Zain

Try pulling off the trim piece just below the instruments and above the steering

It is the upside-down "U" shaped piece in the photo. It just pulls off. In any case, it is the starting point for taking off other things to look further.

You sound English? This is neither a good thing or bad, just an obervation......you could try...
looking in the cold air collection tray across the bottom of the windscreen. You will have to remove the black plastic drip tray that covers this. This is done by lifting the front edge of this out of the clips it sits in, then pulling it forward out of the slot it rests in at the bottom the screen.

Thank you for your suggestions. The sound has disappeared as mysteriously as it started intitially. At least, I have not heard it for past 3 days. I did check the screws by pulling of the trim piece and they seem to be intact.
I guess I will wait and see if it appears again for the next course of action. I truly appreciate your input. Nonetheless, a new quirk (for a lack of better word) has emerged which I shall post in a separate thread.
Regards,
Zain
