Default 2002 a6 3.0L

Rough idling
Car only starts with a jump
When you apply any gas to it the car dies

What needs to be done to fix this?

Pull the codes with VCDS. Search google for the codes.

What george said. Also 1) What happens if you charge up the battery before trying to start? 2) Is the charging system working?

Yes, VCDS is a type of OBDII reader. It works especially well with VW, Audi, Skoda, etc.

OBD II will not give you the information you will need. (VCDS is a more extensive version specifically for VW/ Audi.) It will only give you CEL light codes. You need a VAG Com scan to read all the various systems on Audi. Obviously you do not need to scan to recharge the battery. All you need to check the charging system for function is a voltmeter. It should read around 14.2 volts at idle.

So I should be able to just reset it to the normal configuration through the VCDS and look up what the problem is if it is just electrical. As far as it losing power when I try to gas it and it dies.

While the VCDS does EVERYTHING, this should be adequate for figuring out why your car won't start. That said, for a few bucks more, you can have the real thing that does EVERYTHING...

With no codes, we can only guess at the problem...so I will.

Battery issue needs to be resolved first. Since we’re guessing, start by buying a battery. Then do a throttle body adaptation (search) and see if that cures the idle issue.
