I just got a quote for replacing the starter on my 2002 A6 4.2. The indy shop said the subframe had to be removed and the labor was 7 hours, $600.00.
Has anyone replaced their starter and if so can you tell me what it required.

I have, no subframe dropping required... you don't even have to put the car into service position, really unless you have big hands.

-un-tension the serpentine belt and unhook it from the alternator.
-Remove the alternator from the bottom of the car, there's 2 bolts (upper through-bolt and a lower), as well as the wiring.
-You can get the upper starter bolt from the top if you remove the air cleaner assembly and reach way down, it goes through the trans bellhousing as well. It's much easier from the top than trying to get it through the wheelwell.
-Remove the lower starter bolt from underneath the car, along with the positive wire and smaller solenoid wire.
