2004 A6 w/ 17" rims - tires keep shredding

Yes, I agree with doing the same thing over and over being insane. That is why I am looking for new solutions. I DO KNOW that I've had this problem before with a number of different shops doing the alignment, and after this shop does the alignment, the issue goes away for a while - but this time it came back quickly.
I am going to have them put new tires on and then try to take it to Audi to get it aligned today/tomorrow. I will have my old tires put on the front (they will need to be replaced soon anyway) so it won't be a problem long run.
Right now the passenger side is exhibiting SOME of this issue - but it isn't nearly as bad as the passenger side. I have, at other times, however had the passenger side be the bad side. They both do it, just at different times.

Stock wheels? I have the same issue (snow tires last great) but my summer wheels are from an A4 or something and have a slightly different offset. I'm starting to think that the offset difference (only a few mm) is just too much. Next set I get I'll try on my BBS RCs that came with the car and just pay a tire shop to swap the rubber each season ...

Did you ever figure this wearing problem out? I have started encountering the same issue and think it is a function of a worn suspension or settled springs. Wheel spacers did help but not completely eliminate the rubbing noise i hear when I brake.
