255/40-17's DO fit on a 2.7t...
I recently purchased a set of S6 wheels (with tires), and while I'm waiting for a new set of Michelin 245/45 MXXX3's (on special) to arrive, I thought I'd see for myself if they fit. To my surprise, they were no closer to any suspension parts then my 235/45 tires mounted on S4 wheels, because of the different offset. My car has the Eibach lowering springs and the only time I've heard any rubbing is when I hit a hard dip in the road. The rubbing seems to be just on the left front tire and only leaves a very minor mark on the tire. If I were to stay with this setup (which is tempting), I could probably do some minor modification to the inside of the fender to eliminate any rubbing.
At first, I thought this wide tire would look like too much on a non-flared A6, but after having them on my car for a few days, I'm starting to like the look.
I hope to post pictures soon.

yeah, I used slicks of that size on my 2.7T at Thunderhill... boy are they a tight fit though.
At least, it seemed like the front suspension was millimeters from the tire.

Another good arguement for the AllRoad door trim - More Coverage !!!
At least that's what i told my GF ....
I agree that the Mudflaps are of limited use - but they are better then nothing for sure if you live in snowcountry..
