3 spoke steering wheel on 4.2 - normal?
I have a 2000 A6 4.2 (was an Audi Corp auction car) with 15K. It has a Audi Sport 3 spoke steering wheel on it. There are no radio or tel controls on it. Was this a standard steering wheel or not? It also doesn't heat up - and when the dealer ordered a replacement, Audi sent out a wooden steering wheel! (very ugly), told them to send it back. I like the 3 spoke wheel but I'd also like to have the controls on the wheel. How many types of wheels were made for the 2000 4.2? I've also seen contradicting info on regarding whether or not the steering wheel was heated for the 2000 4.2s.

Not normal (more)
The 4 spoke wheel with radio controls comes on the '00 4.2 non sport. (In fact, I don't think there was a sport option for the entire '00 4.2 MY, or so I was told, I took delivery in November '99.) I was also told by my salesman that the heated steering wheel doesn't come with the cold weather package, but he put one on my car anyway, and then later realized a fuse needed to be put in as well to make it work. I park outside and on cold winter days and I like the heated wheel, but gloves work too. The leather on the heated wheel feels cheaper (or it may be a convincing synthetic) and that bothered me at the start, but now I am used to it. The wheel feels significantly thicker that the non heated one, and I like that a lot. That heated wheel, if you opt to have it, is a $500 item, so you should take your time to decide.

Fyi, sport pkg. added to '00 4.2's produced after Dec. 1, 1999 or so I was told.
My car had a week 4 2000 bulid and I took delivery in late February. The Exchange in Highland Park thought I had the first sport package 4.2 in this area. I got lucky b/c my original order was delayed during Oct. due to a production problem. Subsequently they added the sport pkg. and I was able to add it to my order. Delays can be good sometimes, I guess ;-)

My 4.2 is non-sport pkg
The heated steering would be nice but not $500 nice. I live in Minnesota and heavy gloves are a way of life in the winter. I would like to have the controls on the wheel however. The parts guy said to find codes on the lid of the spare tire cover (the car didn't have the manuals with it) and from that they could determine the "correct" steering wheel. By the way, any idea what all those codes mean?

No A6s had heated wheels in '00, premium pkg on 4.2 in '01...
was an option on 2.8s for '98-'99.
No 3 spoke wheel has "ever" been an option on the 4.2. Only the standard 6-button, 4-spoke wheel. In '00 for a time it had the pre-set scan buttons at the bottom, but sometime during '00 and throughout '01 has the R/T, radio buttons on the bottom, no preset scan.
