Default 96 A6 2.8 quattro

Hello who may be reading this. I inherited a dark green 96 A6 2.8 automatic quattro with 60,000 miles, and am VERY enthralled by it. It has to problems which the dealer cannot figure out. The transmittion allows the engine to rev very high before catching 4th gear. Everything checked out fine, but to no avail.
The 2nd problem is there is a horrible shaking when turning somewhat sharply. I am assuming this has to do with the quattro system, and again the dealer has no idea. My dealer seems to be on crack, so if anybody knows how to fix either of these thing an e-mail would make my day. Thank you.

Have you tried a different dealer?

Karl,

The transmission problem is well known. Although originally I heard it was fixed after the 1992 production, I've heard from 1993-now-1996 owners experiencing the same problem.

The most common fix for the problem is a transmission rebuild @ +/- $5,000.

Default Nature of Tranny Problem??

Muhammad, do you have any details regarding the nature of the tranny problem you mentioned? Is this responsible for the shaking (sounds like the center diff is locked up), for the high shift point or both? I'm curious because I'm considering a 2000 A6 Quattro and probably will drop it if there's a major history of tranny problems likely to afflict current-model A6s at a later date.

Thanks.

While I wish I knew the exact cause of the problem, I'm just glad I don't have it. I have talked with several 12v A6/auto transmission owners who have had the problem, and I haven't gotten the idea that even the ones who had it fixed knew what the hell was wrong with it in the first place, other than it doesn't catch gear when shifting and the engine can actually rev as the car is in effect in neutral when this happens.

But the good news is, this transmission was only sold on models from 1992-1997. The 1998 A6 redesign got a tiptronic automanual that I haven't heard of any problems with.

The models with the transmission with known problems are:

1992-1994 100/100S/100CS FWD or Quattro models w/automatic transmission.

1992-1994 S4 if equipped with automatic (I'm not clear on this one, whether the S4 was ever offered w/automatic)

1995-1997 A6 FWD or Quattro models w/automatic transmission.

1995-1995.5 S6 if equipped with automatic (I'm also not clear on this one, whether it was ever offered w/automatic)

1992-1994 90/90S/90CS FWD or Quattro models w/automatic transmission.

Hope this helps,

Muhammad

I have a 92 100CS. My engine frequently revs up like the transmission is in neutral when upshifting at about 35 mph at moderate acceleration. The Audi dealer has twice checked it out on computer and found nothing wrong. A local transmission shop put in new clutches and basically rebuilt the transmission, but when they were done it still has the orginal reving problem. There is a shop in Bend OR that remanufactures Audi automatics for about $2,500.
