We have an '03 A6 3.0 wagon, and have had the bad shakes/idle problem caused by a couple of things. If the CEL flashes or stays on, seems to be the coil (our car is undergoing a coil-ectomy as I type this). The other cause, for us at least, was leaky vacuum hoses. When we purchased this car a couple of years ago, it had a persistent idle bounce just like you describe; we had the vacuum hoses replaced, and it was a huge improvement.

My main problem is this is our 2nd set of coils in less than two years. Is there an upgrade or other way to fix this? Seems like some underlying condition is at fault...

I am having the same symptoms as the original poster. The car is throwing codes.

17544 Bank 1 System too Lean
16684 - Random misfire
16684 - Cylinder 1 misfire
16689 - Cylinder 5 misfire

Car vibrates a little at idle, a little more while excelerating in low rpms, then gets better as rpms increase. Engine light was blinking on my way to work. I turned around to get to the side of the road and light went solid again so I drove it home(about 2 miles) and parked it.

typically a misfire. bad plug. Bad coil (plug-on coil). Bad wire.

None all that costly.

Ihoep you got a lot done for $4k

Ok so all codes and symtpoms point to plugs, Coils, and/or wires.

Any suggestions on what types/brands to get and where to get them?

i assume coilpacks are OEM only. Maybe not. Check with the usual Audi suppliers, blau, ECS, etc.

Plugs? The cornet auto parts store, or the above. I doubt a plug, although maybe they are ready to be changed. Visual inspection should tell you that one.

My car is doing the same thing. I sold the 99a4TQM I had, and got a 06a4TQM (going from 1.8 to 2.0). Love the car, but out of the blue the car started doing the shaking thing when under 1000 RPM. The check engine light is now on, solid.

Anybody here in Southern Maine w/ a VAG TOOL who'd like to give me a hand determining what's wrong with this?

Next question is: is it hurting the car to drive it like that?

Thanks!

Hey I know you posted this like a million years ago Haha but I JUST got an audi a6 2.7t quattro. And have similar problems. Hesitating/jerking at 20 mph. At idle the rpm sits under 1k. I want to try the coil pack solution. Where did you get them for under $100?

You will spend a lot of money in parts if you guess what's wrong with your car. Use a code reader. VCDS would be best but a standard OBD2 would be better than nothing.

Just FYI: The coil packs for a 6 cylinder will run you about $180 plus shipping from
