Default A6 2.7T vs VW Passat W8

I am waiting for the 2002 A62.7T but just learned that Passat is getting a 275 hp v8 with 6 speed trans. I still think the A6 would have the edge, at least with more potenial. What do you think?

Wow... the passat with a V8? Do you have a link to specs or an article?

As for your decision, how do the prices compare?

Thanks

Dont know the price yet. Since it won't come out until 2002. Try http://www.vwvortex.com

By the time it arrives $40k no doubt. Unknown about manual shifter, though.

Default No news for N.A. release. Or if it will come at all.

The present GLX 4motion is not available with the manual. VW says that the Passat is competition for Mercedes, not BMW - that is Audi's job ( I think of it going against Infiniti ). It is unlikely that VW would spend 100K and crash a car or two for the small number of expected N.A. stick-shift sales to be garnered. It would be a major gamble to have a 40+ Passat at all. VW is going to be very careful with the Passat image, and thus would not want to create the impression of slow sales with stick-shift versions littering the lot and driving down sales and prices. It's just that the large part of the bell curve in sales will be found with the automatic version.

IF we do get the W8, expect a high base trim level, few options, and a price in the high 40K range. Expect possible introduction next spring if VW decides there is a market here.

Write a letter to your regional sales rep for VW and tell them what you want. They get together with all the others across the country and decide what will sell here. They place orders or lobby for new products when they visit Germany. The same goes for Audi.

Add 6K for the engine, 2K for the bi-xenon, who knows what other gadgets to the 32K GLX price...

Default I bet you're right....

...about the tranny issue. I would expect no manuals unless this thing is a big hit and they look to broaden the model range. If this sells, my guess is it will sell to VERY satisfied previous VW owners, who love their cars and are ready for a step up and don't care that VW has never sold a car in this range before. In any event, I don't expect big sales.
