A6 2001 2.7T AWD - 37,500 miles....possible clutch problem?
37,500 miles. Having problems with clutch. able to shift up. cannot shift down. to get into 1st gear i have to turn engine off and put into 1st gear. Have taken it to two places. it's not the hydraulics. And they both indicate the clutch should not be going out. but they are not able to figure out what's wrong. I know very little when it comes to repairs. Can anyone help?
thanks

FWIW my clutch died around 40k miles. The first owner only put on about 8k miles per year, so...
...I'm thinking they did all stop-n-go driving and/or rode the clutch a lot. When I got it apart I was pleasantly surprised - the disc was simply worn out, no signs of heat or other abuse on the flywheel and pressure plate surfaces. Symptoms were different than yours, it was slipping in higher gears at full throttle.
It would be helpful to know your location, there may be a shop near you that we can recommend.
I can't really comment more on your situation - thoughts of worn syncros or a failing slave cylinder are going through my head, but it's all speculation.

With the motor on, clutch pedal down, what gears can you engage?
If you can step on the clutch and up shift then its working.
FYI.. I have 167,000 miles on my original clutch.

Re: With the motor on, clutch pedal down, what gears can you engage?
in order to engage any gears i have to turn off the motor. i can then put it in 1st gear. then i turn on the motor and am able to engage the remaining gears (2-6). But i cannot shift down.

i think you linkage is the problem.
if you can step on the clutch in 2-6 and then let up ...engaging and disengaging, then the clutch is working. Not being able to shift in this case is likely the tranny or the linkage.
