Re: A6 width
According to Audi's spec's, the 2.7T, 2.8, and 4.2 are all exactly the same width (76.1"). Visually, however, the 4.2 appears significantly wider, due to the flared fenders. Since the maximum width is probably from mirror-to-mirror, however, it's entirely possible that they're the same.
Note, too, that the official width of 76.1" seems implausibly wide. Other sources (R&T, Consumer Reports) show a width of 73.1" for the 2.8, which sounds a lot more likely.
Any A6 owners out there care to measure their cars and add some actual data to this issue?

Re: A6 width - all same except for fenders
All A6's are the same width, except for fenders. Even the Avants are the same. There simply is no way to economically change the width of the car. It requires redesigning too much and creating too many different parts.
The 4.2 is wider if you measure the flares.
