Default Yours blew cool on one side of the car, warm on the other?

How odd that low charge could do that.

Default a mechanical "whirring"...

that is only evident when the A/C clutch was engaged. The pitch changes with RPM's.

It was a "new noise" after my engine was R/R'd.

At first blush one would think it was just alternator whine but it only seems to show up when the A/C clutch is engaged.

Hmm... if I am underfilled and the R134-a refigerant contains a lubricant perhaps I now have extra wear and should demand a new compressor unit.

Default I hear a "purr" at times, such as when you rev and let the rpms drop... "prrrrrr."

They tell me its normal. But, if your compressor and clutch were not changed when the engine was repaired, then the fact that it is a new noise bothers me a bit.

Default Yes! The drivers side was warm and the passenger side was cool...

..the mechanic I took it to said there was a problem with the controls for the AC and wanted 8 hours to take apart the console and investigate the climate control system. Luckily I did some homework on Audi world and found he was wrong.

Default It's amazing how many problems are common among these cars...

..Again I had this same problem and it is a piece of rubber caught in the primary electric fan. The primary fan fails and the secondary fan runs on high speed causing a "jet engine" like sound or whinning. Again the same mechanic (Who I don't use anymore)told me that it was working properly and after investingating on AW I found he was wrong. Just so you know you have two electric fans. The primary is on the engine side of the radiator and the secondary is on the grill side of the radiator/condensor. Do a search under fan whine and you will find the directions on how to fix this porblem. It takes 5 minutes to resolve. And your car will be quiet again. You need to fix this before checking the refrigerant level as not having proper airflow across the condensor may affect the refrigerant pressures. Good luck - hope this helps. (If your dealer is telling you it's working ok find another dealer to work on your car!)

Default I can't tell you how much $$ I have saved by using this forum...

... now I fix my own problems instead of paying a mechanic $70.00/hr. I have worked on older cars most of my life but was intimidated with newer technology. Next step VAG tool!!!

Default not the fan, I've kept tabs on that, it is like a "purr" that Stoney refers to...

the "whir" or "purr" is more noticable at idle than at any other time due to engine noise drowning it out.

With the A/C blower on high inside and/or radio and/or sunroof tilted up it is hard to hear it.

Default My "turbine" runs any time it is over 90F, sometimes lower if the car is sitting still...

Are you thinking that this is normal behavior? If not, I should be checking for anything impeding the primary fan?
