that's the goal of them. Cheaper and more convenient.
but they are much worse summer tires and much worse snow tires.
take A/Ss on the track sometime. They will be saved from sucking by probably self -destructing.
And in the snow - no comparison.
But a/s's are, as you say, cheaper initially to buy, and involve less work.
In the long run however, the cost is Abbot the same, since the snows save wear on the summers.
And the first accident they prevent....

I would love to run dedicated summers and winters, but they are too much for me to put out at once, as I am still in school. The DWS's I run have great reviews for moderate to heavy snow for the type of tire and I dont need them to be super sticky in the summer. Just average is fine and I don't track my car at all, so no problem there.
I have been in a car with dedicated snows, and your right the difference is huge. They do cost about the same, but up front its too much for tires, i'd much rather save for the next big maintenance job.

good logic.
You might, however, look at buying a used set of snows and tires - steelies even - off season.
I have a set of 15" 195/65-15 Winter 190s - they are OLD, that anyone can take off my hands pretty cheap. ( i keep in case i buy an A4 avant beater...)
I've bought nice sets with alloys for 60% off - in great shape. You just need to know what fits and search.
