Averaging 18 mpg in city/hwy driving..getting up to 21 mpg on hwy..what is wrong?? Anyone else??
I have a my2000 A6 Avant Quattro, about 5 months old and 6700 miles. Have not had my first oil change yet. I also have a set of Yokohama AVS sports on (different rolling resistance...but this much??)
I recently drove to NYNY in open hwy roads...no jams (can you believe it??) and only manage 22mpg despite some very very very VERY conservative driving techniques with fuel economy as the main focus. I really wanted to see what I could get. I see everyone else with much better mileage and wanted to see if it is only me or is tbis a characteristic of avants with fatter/stickier tires (235/45/17). Nonetheless, there is not much range on this car if this is the case. My two other colleges/bosses at work with the same car get much better mileage on stock tires.
This has been bugging me for a while.

Man, with the 2.7T its a shock to switch the display to see what your current mpg is doing. From a green light, normal acceleration it show 6.0 or 8.4 then gets up to the 17 to 19 range.LOL I saw what the starting out acceleration was doing and cringed!!!! Then punched it (WOT) and brackets came up around the numbers like (2.3) (3.6) !!!!
Just kidding/ I am getting 17 to 18 mixed driving 90% city 10 freeway.Tiptronic

That does sound really low. I don't have an Avant, but every weekend I do 95 miles each way out of NYC and back, and get about 27 or 28 highway, even with A/C, 2 people, a dog (OK, he's small, but he'd be pissed off if I didn't mention him), luggage and golf clubs. Mix in the local driving during the weekend and I usually average out to about 23 or 24.<p>IndieA62.8

As I mentioned earlier ...
these are not the best fuel eco cars.
On a recent road trip from LA to SF and back, cruise control set, level road, I couldn't manage more than 21 mpg over 14+ hours of driving. So I guess that's all she wrote on the A6.
