Brand new 2.7

Brand new 2.7
Finally, after months of agonizing over whether to get a 2.7 or a 4.2, and which of the color combinations to get, I just purchased an '01 Silver/Onyx 2.7, with premium, luxury and sound (no sport package, because the seats are just too narrow). I traded in a '98 2.8 Silver/Tungsten (I know, I went way out on a limb with my new color combination, but I can't envision taking care of the vanilla interior, which I love, with 4 and 7 year old sons)with just under 24,000 miles. I bought it from Park Place in Dallas, and my salesman, Joe Sloan, was great. I highly recommend him (and his next-cubicle neighbor, Oscar, is a pretty good guy, too) and the dealership: very straight-forward, low-key and professional in their approach. Only 975 miles of break-in left....

Vanilla would have worked with seat covers. It's a whole lot cooler in the summer. I didn't get the PSK either, but 17" wheels makes up 2/3rd's of the difference, a good investment. No ground clearance worries, either. Enjoy.

1. Handling. The 4.2, with a heavier nose, has more understeer in tight corners. the 4.2's 17" wheels help offset this to some extent, but the 2.7 with 17" wheels (when I add them) should then be even that much better.
2. Price. Equip the two cars with similar options, and there's a price difference of 6-7,000 dollars. For that difference, you get a bigger, non-turbo charged engine (which might allow you to sleep better at night, if you have turbo concerns), aluminum hood, power adjustable (and part of seat memory) steering wheel, flared fenders (love those), bigger rocker panels or running boards (don't love those), lower and wider stance, different front air dam, 17" wheels (I found it hard to walk away from those; I love the 5-spoke wheels that come with the sport package and are now, in theory, available for $1000 without the sport package), a bigger gas tank and a sculpted back seat that definitely turns it into a 4-passenger car. I can't think of any other differences off the top of my head. Are those differences worth the price to you? Ultimately, I decided they weren't, but the decision is yours. I think both cars are fantastic, and you can't go wrong with either one. In fact, when my 2.7 premier purchase plan runs out in 48 months, I may yet end up in a 4.2. Have fun deciding.

As usual, you're right; my mistake (it was late and I was doing
the list off the top of my head). With as much as you know about, and care about, these cars, have you ever thought about selling them?

I appreciate the compliment, Steve.
Though I've never worked in any type of sales position, I've loved cars since I was a toddler. There's something about these particular cars that has admittedly turned me into a staunch admirer. I guess it's just a genuine appreciation for how beautifully executed these cars are. If I thought that I could make a reasonable living selling them while being allowed to treat customers the way I like to be treated, I'd consider it. Unfortunately, I know a lot of great car sales people who are required by management to engage in slimy behavior, and I just couldn't do that.
April, are you out there? Any comments?
