Buying a 1998 - 2002 A6 - help
It is almost time to replace my 1992 100cs and I'm thinking of replacing it with a used A6. Probably looking at model years 1998 - 2002. Are there any A6 model years, or engines I should avoid? What about the 4.2l 8cycl? Is there anything I should be on the lookout for as warning signs when looking at a6's? What big repair expenses can I expect??
Thanks, Mike.
Thanks, Mike.

Do you have a specific price range? That will help narrow your choices...
if you want a car to tune and chip, the 2.7T twin turbo is for you, but is on the bottom of the food chain for reliability because of the potential turbo failure.
The 4.2 is a great car, very powerful bone stock, but there have been some recent issues with the tranny, unrelated to mods, plus is drinks gas like there is no tomorrow.
The 2.8/3.0 V6 are reliable engines, but some would consider them underpowered for this 2-ton car, with no real power upgrades except for a VERY expensive supercharger setup.
Then you also have to ask yourself, do you want a stick or a auto tranny. If you want manual, there is only one choice, the 2.7T. If you want auto, any model works.
Last, drive them. See what fits your budget, and what fits your power needs.
Whatever you decide, don't be fooled by the CPO program offered by Audi. If anything has been evident over the last year or so, many have had some questionable items come up right after buying the car, things that SHOULD have been caught with the CPO pre-inspection the dealers were supposed to do. Bald tires, missing items, worn suspension components, etc.
See what is offered in an extended warranty program, or try to find a car that is still covered by the factory warranty.
You should also read up on Stoney's Links, although there is just so much information there, it might be information overload right now. Bookmark it anyway.
Happy shopping!

2.8 is slow...go for a 2002 A6 3.0 or later

Thanks for all the info. Trying to keep it at $16,000 and under. Not going to do any mods to the car- just use as a daily driver. Looking for a automatic obviously a quattro. What is Stony's link (i'm probbaly looking right at it but don't realize it). What is the gas mileage on the 4.2 engine?
Thanks again for everything.

Stoney's Links is a collection of various posts and other links about the A6...
the link is right above my picture below...
For mixed highway/local road driving, the 4.2 gets mid-teen MPG, the 2.7T probably around 20 MPG (at least mine does and I have a heavy foot), and the 2.8/3.0 gets probably low 20s.
As an unmodded "daily driver" you should probably test drive each one just to see which one you like, and then comparison shop private sale cars and others at dealers. I doubt you'll find a 4.2 for that price range, unless it is a high mileage 2000 4.2.

No mods? You had better stop visiting this particular website then...
Folks around here will get you into serious trouble upgradewise.
Go bury your wallet in the back yard NOW!
And don't talk to teddybgame, Boston Driver, or a few of the other local "characters". They'll have that wallet out and emptied in no time.
