Buying Decision(3.0, 2.7Turbo, No Audi At All).......Input Please, Have Fun!
Audi 3.0L, Audi 2.7T, No Audi At All!
I have owned my 1999 Audi A6 2.8L Quattro for about three years and have really enjoyed the car. Recently, a local indy/dealer specializing in Euro's, found a good deal on a 2004 2.7T S-Line A6 Quattro for me with about 65K on it. I wanted to play out my scenario and see what everyone thinks.
Pro's
1) I liked the ride, comfort, stability, and safety of my A6 in general but especially in the snowy winters. I loved the stereo, space, and cabin layout!
2) My current A6 was very reliable until about 110K-120K
3) The price for this new S-Line 2.7 turbo is right.
4) Of the other cars I have looked at, my insurance would be lowest for this car.
Con's
1) I drive alot(40-45K/yr) and have been hesistant to embrace the 2.7Turbo. I have always felt the 3.0 is less maintenance worthy car and less total cost of ownership in general.
2)I drive alot and after 110K-120K the cost to maintain my current A6 become a problem(first with serpentine, suspension work, then the Bosch brake module, to the new water pump/timing belt, now more suspension work, cat converter, and its leaking oil up top) that has gotten worse on its way to the current 160K. I fear this in buying this S-Line, especially with the 2.7T.
3) Gas prices, but heck, my 20-25 mpgallon I get now isn't bad. What can I expect in avg. driving conditions mpgallon wise fo the 2.7T?
So there you have it folks. That is the what I am looking at. The style and performance of the A6 S-Line is probably unmatched in the Audi A6 line, but I am not sure that justifies it for me. I drive alot and worry about the total cost of ownership. I am used to a 2.8L, so an A6 with the 3.0L would be fine for me performance wise, but the style of the S-Line gets alot of cool points. The price is good, but if I looked I probably could find the same deal with for a 3.0, and if the TCO is lower than its better.
No Audi?
I need all wheel drive for as much as I drive in winters. Anyone out there have the opinion that any Audi is wrong for me. For the miles I drive is there a better AWD car that won't compromise huge performance difference and cost me alot less to own. I have considered the Volvo's(2003-05 S60's, 05 S40 T5 AWD), a 2005 Subaru Legacy(I Know, I know), and a 2003-2005 Infinity G35x.
I would love to hear your opinions!

Re: the subaru legacy (GT version) is a praised car, dont joke over it!
I wasn't joking, I have taken for a test drive. But, it felt like a Honda that would have all wheel drive. Nothing in the performance and feel of the Audi, nor the comfort in the cabin. I think it would be a very low cost car to own, reliable, safe enough, good AWD. Thats why I drove it.

I would stick with Audi for as much time as you spend driving it's worth it
There are other AWD cars out there with lower TCO, but is it worth it to have a less expensive car if you are driving over 120 miles a day on average?
I can't say if the 2.7t or 3.0 will be cheaper in the long run. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. I would look to consumer reports for some statisical data to base your decision on. Here you will only get opinions.
