Buying a Used 2.7TQM, need help please
I had a 98 18TQM, but it was totaled in a recent accident. I'm replacing it with a used A6 27TQM, and I want to know what to watch out for. The one I'm going to take a look at is a 2000 with 52K miles.
Can anyone give me an idea of what sorts of things I might easily spot that would be signs of abuse? It's about a 250 mile drive so I'm only going to be able to make one trip.
Any help would be much appreciated

Turbo plumbing - Biggest problem, but hard to check visually.
Get Audi service records (I think the owner/dealer should be able to get these). See if the turbo bypass valves were replaced. These failed fairly regularly. It will also show if the car was a problem.
If you are buying from a dealer, the Audi Assured warranty will buy peace of mind. If buying privately, don't pay more than $22,000.

Thanks. I think I'll be able to get it for around 17,500. I was planning on replacing the TBB and BPV's anyway. Read a good post from Stoney, that said it's a must.

Here are the things that should have already been replaced under warranty
getting the warranty records BEFORE you go see the car is key:
BPV's
TBB
F-hose
Tie Rod Ends
Bumper and window regulator recall
Fuel sender recall(s)
Turbo's if you are really lucky.
Brake rotors/pads
If these things have all been fixed and updated, the car will be rock solid.

Mine went bad on my 2000 at about 20k miles, and I have heard lots of stories
from 99 and 2000 owners who have had bad ones.
It is a pretty simple check to see if they are bad, and not an expensive fix.
It comletely fixed the vibration I had, and the groaning at low speeds

Pretty much same as any car...
Consider the age and the mileage and take a good look at the car to see how it was cared for. Look at the oil for color, tailpipes for color.
Make sure you do a cold start (motor cold-completely) and stand behind the car to see what exhaust looks like.
Look at tires, wear pattern will tell you a lot... was it kept properly inflated, was it driven excessively hard in the corners etc.
Get the VIN and do a check before you go, it may save you a trip. CarFax.com
Turbo plumbing although a problem with these cars is not important to you, cheap to fix and it does not indicate how car was cared for.
And no matter what get a good extended warranty. Repairs on this car are very expensive. And with the warranty you are covered even if you missed something in your once over.
