My friend is going to buy a used A6, 98 model. He asked me for suggestions- I test drove the car, and found that car has very poor power. I think its loosing compression. Plus it needs timing chain (done 122000km = approx 85kmiles?)

Now my question - what are the things to look for?
I checked the following and found-
1. Doors are loose.
2. Gearbox (tiptronic) is shaky - changing gears with thud.
3. RPM varies wildly at the end of of steering turn(stationery car - I check it to see if power sterring is ok)

The car is without trip comp, with concert radio(no cd) and no leather seats.

So what do you think - 12k for this car. Assuming 2k expense for waterpump and timing chain - is this car worth 14k?

Honestly, that sounds like a lot for a car with hardly any options and that many pending problems.

He should get a newer and better equiped A4 instead of this A6.

Poorly equiped, many miles, not maintained, bare bones...I would look around for more car for more $

Move on. Maybe pay $8K max. Always more than you think needs done.
