There are marks on the cam caps and chain sprockets to align the chain. However, because the cam adjuster can move a bit, it's better practice to count the links between the two marks on the chain sprockets. Unfortunately Bentley has the wrong info for bank two. This is because the chains actually turn in opposite directions on the two heads.

There are no timing belt marks on the 30v.

So you can actually have the camshafts off a tooth or two on the camshaft chain and not grenade the motor?

Bank 1 is at 16 rollers, bank 2 between 14 and 15, and everything is running great. Now I just need to remove everything one last time to get the oil seals installed right and this thing should be good to go.

Gotta love Audi. 215,000 miles and the only thing getting in the way is me!

How did you discover that bank 2 doesn't have 16 rollers between the timing marks? The factory repair
manual that I have for the A4 AHA 30 valve engines doesn't make a distinction for the link count between bank 1 and bank 2.

It's been mentioned somewhere here or TOF before. In the past I also counted on at least two different heads to verify.

It makes sense when you think about. The both heads are the same casting, which is why the adjuster is in the front of one and the back of the other. The chain tensioners are different right to left, and the chain runs across them in opposite directions. It's not like they are identical.

Sorry to jump in this thread 5 months after, but which side is bank one and which is bank 2? My Pass. side head is the one that is off, and I'm feeling that it (pass side) should be at the 15 rollers. Is this correct?

Sort of bumping this thread again, but I ****ed my timing a bit while doing some gasket work and I've got the exact same setup on my passenger side cam as the original post. The exhaust tick lines up perfect but the intake tick is one step to the right.

If I'm understanding correctly, it's okay that the ticks don't line up with the arrows, it's just the amount of rollers in between the ticks that I'm worried about? The ticks on my driver side cam line up perfectly...

I replaced my cam seals via removing of the cams. Installed with one of the keys not aligned in the window thinking that the count only mattered. That was incorrect. Threw a cam sensor code when it was all together. Had to take it all apart and moved it one link over to get the windows to align. Put it all together again and no more code.
