I think the digits you mentioned would be there accurately.

6th Digit: Restraint system.
2 = Front and side (front) airbags
5 = Same as 2 + Side (rear) airbags
6 = Same as 2 + Side curtain airbags

9th Digit: Check digit, as was stated. Means nothing at all rather than a label. Will be a 0-9 or an X.

from the check digit, the sixth digit always varies between "5" and "6". The strange part is, the only option for the RS6 is whether or not to activate the rear side airbags. (As respects airbag options) So, for those that chose not to activate the rear side airbags, I'm assuming they got the "6" digit as opposed to the "5" digit since they all have side curtains.

I know the dealer had to actually activate them and have new RS6 owners sign a waiver if memory serves me correctly, but assuming you didn't order it, then they were never placed in the door to begin with, thus the factory VIN designation.
