The 4.2 A6 TC fails because of the TCU programming.
The A6 uses the same TC as the A8 and they hold up good, different programming. BTW Sachs makes the TC for all Audi. Independent shops are aware of the problem and they work much cheaper than the dealer. Our price is $1200 for TC with installation or $3500 for the transmission rebuild with TC included.

Complete lack of mechanical sympathy? Some people think that spending a lot of money
means the car should be reliable. Ha! When I wrote service for British cars, many Rolls owners did not believe their cars needed maintenance, because they bought into the "best engineered cars on earth" line. Ha!

Some non car people do not recognize when something is broken or about to break. They
just blithely drive along, thinking that is just how things are supposed to be, or that the functionality changed one day, but don't know it's broken. I know of several people who just write it off as a car getting old, and take no steps to investigate or prevent future larger failures. They drive until it stops moving, at which point they take it to a shop. Then they are surprised when the mechanic hands them a laundry list of broken things.
Then there are the people like we have on this forum. Every new sound, smell, or sensation is cause for worry and extrapolation

Yup.. I love when we do live jobs at school.
Some people have cars with misfires, bad tires, etc., but they're worried about a slight squeak when turning :P Then there are also people that bring in cars with ZERO friction material left on the pads. Seriously... How do you not think something is wrong when your brakes don't work and you hear a grinding sound?
