Checking diff oil level, help please...
Hi All,
I have a 1998 A6 Avant 2.8SE with the auto 5 speed tiptronic gearbox. The other day there was oil coming from the area around the differential front right (drivers side, UK based!) output shaft (that connects to the inner CV joint then the driveshaft)I know there is a seal in there keeping the diff oil in. I wiped the area and it hasn't leaked since (3 days of intermiittent driving). I am told there is a breather there and am thinking it came from there. The day it leaked my wife was driving the car who drives like Alonso and sticks it in Park whilst handbrake turning into a parking space.
Could this have caused the oil to come out of the breather (if there is one) or if not why hasn't it leaked since?? I want to check the diff oil because of this. I know how to do the main gearbox oil (17mm bolt out of pan base, fill till it comes out at proper temp with car level) but what about the diff oil. Is it as I've read in an A8 forum a fill bolt just ahead of the front right (UK drivers side) driveshaft, fill it with 75w-90 synthetic gear oil till it comes back out of the hole?? Any ideas what size allen key is needed for the fill bolt??
This is what I intend to do, please can somebody tell me if this is right or wrong before I go and *&^%$ up my gearbox.

Re: Checking diff oil level, help please...
For the manual transmission it's a 17mm hex key.
The following instructions are from eBahn cd:
Final drive oil level (automatic transmissions 01V & 01L), checking
Front and all wheel drive
- Remove filler plug for fluid fill opening (arrow).
- Check fluid level: fluid must be filled to lower edge of filler hole.
CAUTION!
If the oil level is too low, the transmission must be checked for leaks and repaired. It is not sufficient to just top off oil.
- If there are no leaks from the final drive, top off with gear oil SAE 75 W 90 (synthetic oil), Part No. G 052 145 S2.
CAUTION!
Part numbers are for reference only. Always check with your Parts Department for the latest parts information.
- Always replace sealing ring on filler plug.
- Install filler plug and tighten.
Tightening torque: 30 Nm (22 ft lb)
