Chuck540, I wandered farther to your darkside today ..........
As I posted on Saturday, my wife and I went shopping to replace my totaled 00' 4.2 finally. We were looking for reasonbly priced sport wagons. As I stated, we came home very disappointed in the wagon choices in the U.S.. Yes, I knew before I drafted my post what the reasons are for the selection of import models we get here are. But I appreciated the responses from all. Especially Stoney's "Impractical BMW" ;-)
We set out to get a functional family sport wagon, until I got THE CALL. On Sunday, after some more shopping (mostly talking amongst ourselves over cappucinos), my salesperson at the BMW dealer I bought my 01' 330i from called me and said he just had a customer cancel his M3 and it was available if I was interested. Well duh! This morning I canceled an appointment and ran down to the dealer to look at it. I never even drove it before (I have driven them before) my 330i was signed over and the M3 was mine.
My wife has already made it quite clear that I will not be allowed to complain about the children carrying issues with it or add a third car to the fleet as was originally planned. And she means it! I think I will be able to cope somehow ;-)
Perhaps if I could have had a 2.7T or 4.2 Avant, this would not have happened. In a perverse way, I am glad I can't get an Avant in those configurtations!

Welcome to the darkside...I am your father...

...the dark 540i/6. Well actually I guess an M5 would be your father but I am your poor surrogate father from the other side of the tracks.

How many kids are you stuffing into the back? I've thought about trading my '01 S4 for an A6 4.2 for
...for the increased kid carrying capacity. (Please spare the minivan jokes- my wife has that covered ).
If I could find an even swap I'd probably do it (although I doubt that would happen!). Maybe my S4 plus a nice custom guitar:

Maybe I'll put one in the trunk of my S4 in exchange for your flawless 4.2

There's no such thing as an, "impractical BMW". It was the, "je ne sais quoi", wasn't it?.....
Audi Sport Station Wagon to 2-door BMW M3. You're crazier than Andre!
BTW, What color? How does it compare to 330i?

Titanium Silver over Cinnamon leather which is interesting .........................
because the website and the sales brochures say you cannot do it. But the special order was allowed.
As far as how different they drive I have basically only driven it about 30 miles and it has the break-in period to go through. What I can tell you is that around town it will not be as nice to drive. The suspension is obviously stiffer than the sport package version I had before, but not by too much. The 18" wheels will make as much difference as the suspension will in ride comfort. Plus there will be more shifting with the extra gear in the box.
The engine is very different. But since I cannot take it past 4800 RPMs for a while I will not truly know until then. It sounds like a 2-stroke though. I like the sound of the 3.0 better to tell you the truth. There will obviously be much more motor left after 5000 RPMs than with the 3 liter since it has a 2000 RPM higher redline. I can't wait ;-)
