Default Cleaned Mass Airflow Sensor and gained 17% better mileage...stoopid

When driving back from the Kansas City Audi Club's track day at Heartland Park I noticed that my mileage was way low. I could barely keep the average reading on the trip computer above 20mpg. My brother and I cleaned his MAS in his M5 at the track using isopropyl alcohol (a tip from M5board.com) and he said the difference in acceleration and mileage was instant, so we tried it on the A6. I had a code for a few days and VAG'd it and it said the problem was low voltage for the MAS sensor, so I definitely knew what the problem was. Unfortunately, the alcohol alone didn't work as the code came back when I cleared it.

After I got back to Oklahoma City I did a search online about MAS cleaning tips and found out CRC has a MAS cleaning spray. After about 10 minutes I had the MAS cleaned and re-installed after some liberal spraying and took the car on a 20 mile test. I set the cruise at 80mph which was about how fast I traveled back to OKC. I averaged 23.8mpg via the computer vs. 20.1 mpg on the way up and back to Topeka. I also did a high-speed run and noticed there was smoother power delivery and no surging like I noticed at times when passing semis. For $6.50, that was a heckuva deal. <-- Minnesooota accent.

I was worrying that the MAS was out, but now I think I'm okay. I'll VAG it tomorrow since I was up at 4:30 this morning and am dead tired. I'll post again tomorrow afternoon about the results of trying to turn the code off.

Wonder how many MAF replacements might have been avoided just by a good cleaning?

That filament inside the MAF is rather fragile and is pretty easy to break if you're not careful.

True. But if you do, a reman is only $150 (my dealer wanted $350 + install for new one)

True. Just spray it with the MAS cleaner. That should be enough. Looked 90X better....

Default Minnesuta, ya know!

Born in Minneapolis, parents moved to Stillwater at 7. Lived there until 21, then moved to Eden Prarie for two years. Then moved to Minneapolis for two more. Now I'm in the Air Force stationed in Oklahoma City. Or as I call it "Oklahoma (Sh)itty".

Minnesota in general and the Twin Cities specifically are so much better than anywhere in Oklahoma (sorry to offend any okies out there). I can't put into words how much better it is or how much I miss being there. Hopefully I'll get up there this fall after coming back from South America...
