Cockpit Heat Revisited - '02 A6 3.0
I know I've asked this question several times on this site but my hope is that eventually someone will relate to my issue/question and be able to provide an answer - on a cool night recently ( low 60's) I drove 5 miles to a restaurant with the vents closed & no heat , parked & had dinner which lasted 2 hours & returned to the car - the cockpit was warm and the the plastic parts above the pedals were slightly warm and the plastic near the passenger foot vent was also very warm - top of dash somewhat warm - the local dealership is no help and so I'm reaching out to this site - recently the check engine light was on & the dealership worked on the catalytic converter - don't know if there's a connection to the cockpit heat ? it's a 2002 A6 3.0 with 30K and the warranty running out in July !! HELP !!!!!

This is quite common.....
and you would find this on the B6 3.0 too. The steering column, under dash, pedal area would get very warm...and make you wonder what the heck is wrong. According to Audi, this is supposed to be normal.
I had so much heat venting around the steering column I thought I had a problem. I asked and the said "normal." Seems that everything that is logical and troubling to us is "normal."

Does the dash recall apply to your car? When short circuits occur they usually get hot first before they burn.Maybe it's just worth checking.

Good thought FKESS ! I've also been shifting my focus away from hot engine air to either a "short" or excess electrical resistance somewhere - these may be the same ? I've forgotten my electricity 101 - the smooth plastic piece near the passenger foot vent gets so hot that I can't attribute it to air especially since I've got the air turned off.
